Local History Room

The mission of the Perry Memorial Library's Local History Room is to support, preserve, maintain, and provide materials for historical and genealogical research in the present-day county of Vance and the contiguous counties of Warren, Franklin, Granville, and Mecklenburg, VA. General historical and genealogical materials, including North Carolina and Virginia, as well as regional and family studies necessary for research, are included in the scope of the Local History Room. In addition to the preservation of materials related to the cultural and historical flavor of former times, the Local History Room also endeavors to capture and record current events.

The Local History Room is located on the second floor of the library and is open for use any time the library is open. Ask the staff member at the Reference Desk to open the door for you if the supervisor is not inside.

None of the materials in the room are available for checkout. The Local History Room contains first edition volumes of many local authors, many Vance County family histories, microfilm of local newspapers, maps, books and pamphlets on how to perform a genealogy search, and much more.

Some of the scrapbooks and other items donated to the Local History Room have been digitized and are available for viewing. Go to our Digital Archives tab to learn more. If you are interested in learning more about genealogy searches and what resources are available from our library, check out the genealogy page.

If you have any questions, please contact Monica Thompson (Adult Services Supervisor) by calling the Local History Room at 252-438-3316 ext 233 or emailing mthompson@perrylibrary.org
